間[ma] is a concept rooted in Japanese culture, which emphasizes the importance of space and stillness between people, objects, and moments. By recognizing emptiness and ambiguity and emphasizing harmony, ma connects everything and gives meaning to the space between them.
I have visualized the extent to which 'ma' is used when reading a book in English and Japanese,
with the 0.3-second pause depicted as the smallest circle and the 5-second pause as the largest circle.
The circles are debossed.
The work was a response to the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) 'spaces between' book design briefs, for which I was awarded membership.
